Home & Living 2020 Report now available

The Netcomm Suisse Observatory has been conducting its second consumer behavior report for 2020 focusing on the home & living industry. The study has been examining Swiss consumers’ habits for buying products and items for their homes online.

The home & living segment includes a broad range of products: home appliances, small and large pieces of furniture, household & kitchen items, decorative items, consumer electronics, articles for home automation, security items and smart living devices. Active online shoppers within the segment are mostly buying home appliances (61% of consumers), small pieces of furniture such as chairs or tables (51%), and household and kitchen items (49%).

The report further highlights that:

  • Most online shoppers buy their products directly from the brands’ sites. Swiss consumers spend on average between CHF 51 and CHF 100 per purchase.

  • The majority of the sample is not shopping abroad – but those who do are mainly driven by cost savings (in particular Swiss Germans; French-speakers are more looking for accessing a broader selection of products).

  • Half of the sample is already making use of omnichannel services. People aged between 36 and 45 years represent the main user group.

  • Home & living subscriptions are used by about 10% of the survey participants with a further 13% planning to use them in the future indicating a shift from ownership to usership-based consumption models

  • Our sample contains a small fraction of people who are already using smart home technologies such as home automation or smart assistants. An even larger group is interested in using these new technologies in the future.

The report also indicates that around half of the sample is interested in using smart home technology. Within this group, around 60% are either already using such devices or is thinking of buying them in the near future.

Thinking about the current situation with retail stores being closed, Fabian Baumberger, Business Development Manager for e-Commerce Services at our Sponsor Swiss Post Asenda, states: “People themselves discover now that shopping furnitures or decoration items online works perfectly well and will keep doing it even more in the future.” Fabian further adds: “The shift from physical home&living stores to onlinestore will not only give a boost to domestic eCommerce but especially to crossborder eCommerce. Spending more time online, consumers and eMerchants will more and more discover the advantages of buying and selling goods across borders. Being specialized in Crossborder eCommerce, we by Asendia Switzerland can help and advise you if you want to expand your online business internationally.”
